![]() THOUSANDS OF CUBANS RALLY FOR END OF EMBARGO IN HAVANA As many as 500,000 Cubans marched through Havana this weekend to show support for Fidel Castro and to protest the U.S. trade embargo against the Caribbean nation. “Look with what force” the people want reform, but they also want peace and opportunity, Castro told the marchers late Saturday. “The people cannot be free as long as the United States is holding our economy and our people hostage by means of political siege.” His comments were reported by Cuba’s official Prensa Latina news agency and by Mexico’s Notimex agency. No independent estimates of the crowd were available, but Prensa Latina said as many as 500,000 people marched in the rain. some held banners that said "give peace a chance" in both Spanish and English while others held signs saying, "End the embargo" or "Stop the Starvation" or "We love America, Love us back" Castro has followed through with his promise for social reforms in order to not only provide a better society in Cuba, but also as a signal to the world that the cold war era of standoff politics is over in Cuba and that they want to become a modern participant in global politics and global peace. |

CUBA TO INCREASE RELATIONS WITH ALLY RUSSIA The Cuban government has decided to once again continue strong diplomatic and military relations with our strong ally Russia for mutual protection militarily and better trading economically. Cuba has plans to increase military equipment bought from Russia as well as possible defense treaties to come. Cuba is abuzz as news of the arrival of Russian ships to the Havana harbor reach the citizens. Cuba is planning a grand welcome to General of the Army and First Deputy Minister of Defense for the Russian Armed Forces, Arkady Bakhin to Havana. This renewing of Cuba-Russian relations would mark a change not seen since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. "Russia is a key ally to our country and a major player in tourism and trade", remarked President Raul Castro at a press conference. "It is good for smaller states to have protecting powers like the Russian Federation especially with provocations from other much larger nations like the United States threaten our sovereignty leaving our nation with a daily reminder of the threat of war against a smaller nation that has done them no harm." When asked about the short and unproductive lower level talks in Mexico City, President Castro had harsh words for what he called the "Stubbornness" and "Bullying, self-righteous and provocative tone" of the United States when opening the talks with "Preposterously unreasonable demands when the Republic of Cuba came to the talks ready to negotiate and compromise."Cuba's new policy according to Castro is to refuse diplomatic relations with the United States, "until such time as the United States apologizes and shows that they are willing to talk not make demands." |
