Secretary-General of the United Nations _____ High Representatives, The following nations will see their term expire on the 31st of December 2015, and will thus have to be replaced by other non-permanent members. As outgoing members the countries of Chad (Africa), Nigeria (Africa), Jordan (Asia, Arab), Chile (LatAm&Car), and Lithuania (Eastern Europe) will not be eligible for re-election during the upcoming election. During the past months various nations have been either nominated, or have announced their own intention to run for the seat(s) of their respective group. During the coming period I would like to give all member states a final opportunity to participate in the upcoming elections and nominate themselves or other states for a seat in their respective group. I would also like to ask the representatives to inform the Assembly if they are interested in contending for the seat(s) of their respective groups. Currently the following member states have announced that they will participate in the upcoming elections: African Group (2 seats) - Arab Republic of Egypt - Republic of Senegal Asia-Pacific Group (1 seats) - People's Republic of Bangladesh - Republic of Korea - Republic of Tajikistan Latin American and Caribbean Group (1 seat) - Eastern Republic of Uruguay - Republic of Cuba Eastern Europe (1 seat) - Republic of Belarus - Ukraine IMPORTANT

![]() Vitaly Churkin Permanent Ambassador to the United Nations Russian Federation Esteemed delegates and distinguished guests, The Russian Federation would like to nominate the Republic of Tajikistan for the Asia-Pacific Group in the upcoming UNSC elections. With the draw down of ISAF forces in Afghanistan and continued problems being created in the country by the Taliban, as well as the fact that the Taliban already poses a threat to regional security and the fact that Tajikistan is directly on the front line of this threat we see it as wise to have their voice in the UNSC in the case that said situation will need to be addressed by the Council. It is our strong believe, as a close partner in security with Tajikistan, that they will be vital in coming years as a front-line state against terrorism, drug running, and other very serious security concerns since they are already heavily involved. As for the Eastern European seat, we would propose the Republic of Belarus. We understand that Belarus is seen by some in Europe in a bad light. But they have shown, through the willingness to mediate between the Ukraine and ourselves during the Ukrainian crisis which ended with the Treaty of Minsk, that they are excellent choices for the seat on the security council and we believe that, while Kiev has very good intentions and we welcome their willingness to serve on this Council, the Ukraine is simply not recovered enough from its internal conflict to be a reasonable choice for the post. With that being said, if they decide they wish to continue as candidates we will not oppose their decision as that is their sovereign right. |
