Stefano Stefanini Permanent Representative of Italy to NATO Esteemed delegates, the recent report on the status of Afghanistan does not bode well. With much of the south of the country back in Taliban hands, the heroin trade stronger than ever, corruption undermining public faith in the state institutions and a police and military without the willingness or ability to enforce control over the country, I fear we may see years of blood and treasure wasted for nothing. In forty years time, will people look back and say 'well, girls were able to go to school for several years until the Taliban regained power, so we can call that a victory!', because right now, I don't see that we have much else to show for ISAF. Do any members have any proposals to address the situation, is there anything that can be done to redress the balance against the Taliban, or is the country destined to fall? |
