Des Moines; President Carter and Massachusetts senator Edward "Ted" Kennedy spoke to there respective supporters this afternoon as Senator Kennedy returned a blow to President Carter by narrowly winning a victory over the President in Maine, giving him the momentum to push forward his challenge to the Incumbent for the Democratic Nomination. President Carter had last month defeated the Senator with a healthy margin in the countries first caucus in Iowa which quickly cast doubt about whether or not a Incumbent President could seriously be challenged. The Democratic primaries have deeply divided the Democratic Party as heavyweight Kennedy carrying a name that is considered political royalty challenges a President who's popularity has seen a fall due to the hostage crisis in Iran and other security Issues in Europe. The President however, In Iowa picked up points by earlier threatening the use of force against Iran should any of the hostages be hurt. The bad blood between the two has been on going since sources say the beginning of the Carter Presidency as the president felt challenged by the clout of Influence Senator Kennedy had and vice verse Senator Kennedy suddenly having a Democratic President to answer to. Also in the race, Jerry Brown came in third In Maine.

On the Republican side former UN Ambassador and Director of the CIA George H.W. bush has defeated popular former Governor of California Ronald Reagan in the Republican caucus by a small margin but still giving him the momentum moving forward to the next caucus. Other Republican candidates Howaqrd Baker, Jon Connally and Phil Crane came in third, fourth and fifth. The victory by Bush has been credited to the large focus he placed on Iowa, whether or not this win and momentum will help him elsewhere remains to be seen but Governor Reagan has polled well in many of the upcoming states. The results are as follows:

Democratic Primary
Iowa caucuses 59.16%[Carter] 31.23%[Kennedy] 9.61%[Unpledged]
Maine caucuses 43.6%[Kennedy] 40.2%[Carter] 13.9%[Brown] -2.4%[Unpledged]

Republican Primary
Iowa 32%[Bush] 30%[Reagan] 15%[Baker] 9%[Connally] 7%[Crane] 4%[Anderson] 1%[Dole]

Congress passes official "Thank you" resolution for Canada
Symbolic Gestures for Canada around nation
Posted Image

Washington D.C. -

The United States congress passed an official "Thank You" resolution aimed at showing there Appreciation for the action taken by Canada which resulted in the rescue of six American embassy worker trapped behind enemy lines in Iran. While Several of the detail are still classified as to keep the people who may have helped them in Iran safe, what has come out was that they were given Canadian passports on the permission of the Canadian government so that they may pass Iranian security undetected. The resolution deeply thanks the Canadian government and people for there efforts to help the American people and recognizes the strong leadership Ottawa exhibited in the matter while reaffirming the strong relationship between the two countries.

The 6 hostages as well as Canadian ambassador Kenneth Taylor met with President Carter in the White House where he personally thanked the Ambassador as well as placing a call to Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and speaking with him. "The United States expresses its utmost gratitude to the Canadian people and Government. We will not forgot the kindness Canada has shown in these dangerous times and the sense of brotherhood between Canada and Washington as Ottawa stands shoulder to shoulder with us against terrorism and our enemies. " said President Jimmy Carter as he addressed reporters from the Canadian embassy in Washington. Other symbols around the country have popped up as the Empire State building lit up Canadian colors in a show of appreciation for Canada while the Canadian national anthem was played at the start of several sporting events and Canadian flags hung across the American side of bridges connecting the 2 countries borders and .

Americans feel as though this was finally a chance for them to strike back at Iran in a "Gotcha" moment as months of negotiations have produced no results since the start of the crisis. However, President Carter reminded the nations that there will still hostages in Iran and pledged the US would continue to vigorously negotiate for there release. While Americans across the country are celebrating, politically this is seen as a blow to President Carter as recent removal of American Forces from Greece, the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan and the situation in Iran has demolished his support and popularity making him appear weak and Ineffective on the world stage even as he tries to fight that Image.

Because of his damaged Image, pollsters now believe a challenge to the Incumbent President by Massachusetts senator Ted Kennedy is a real possibility.

Canadian Navy Procurement to Cripple North Atlantic Operations: Anonymous Pentagon Official

Posted Image

Washington D.C | USA -- The Canadian Navy has planned out it's intentions to purchase 8 Näcken SSK and 8 Lupo-class FFG, decisions that have left top brass in the Pentagon scratching their heads.

An anonymous official from the Pentagon said this "There are a lot of worrying things about these planned purchases, none of these ships are designed for North Atlantic operations in the winter, which have some of the worst sea conditions in the world. Nether the Frigates or the Submarines have the range to operate for extended periods of time, with some estimates of the submarine's patrol time be put at roughly 10 days between returning to port to resupply, something that leaves massive gaps for Russian ships to sneak through. As for the frigates, they're to narrow to survive the rough seas of the North Atlantic, leaving Canada completely undefended for at least 4 months of the year, I can only be left to assume Canada expects NATO allies to pick up the slack there."

"This purchase puts the United Kingdom and the rest of NATO in a hard place, the UK was reportedly hoping to have Canada pick up some slack in the North Atlantic as they scaled back their budget, however this is likely going to have to be reconsidered now. As for the United States, well the US will likely be forced to cover the massive gaps left by the Canadian military so not to allow the Russian a passage through the North Atlantic."

"The Canadian Navy needs to step back and take a long hard look at it's needs and operation capability before it cripples it's self for the decades to come."

General Dynamics To Offer Oliver Hazard Perry To Canada: Report

Posted Image

Washington D.C | USA -- According to a recent leak from within General Dynamics the company is reportedly working in concert with the Pentagon to offer Canada the possibility to build Canadianized Oliver Hazard Perry class FFG's in Canada. The Oliver Hazard Perry class is widely considered a far better fit for Canada's role in the North Atlantic over the currently ordered Lupo class from Italy, ships that were designed with the relatively calm seas of the Mediterranean in mind, not the rough winter North Atlantic. The leak plans would reportedly have Canada build the ships in Canada, something that was not agreed upon for Canada's Lupo class purchase to the dismay of shipyard workers and something that came as quite a shock to the industry as a whole.

The leaked plans would not just allow Canada to build the ship but to also customize the ship to fit Canadian needs, such as improved anti-submarine warfare abilities. One military analyst also pointed out the interoperability if Canada chose to go with the Oliver Hazard Perry over the Lupo class, he said "The United States Navy, and the Australian navy either use or will be using Oliver Hazard Perry's en'mass as large parts of their naval forces and if Canada chose to jump on board it would certainly increase the easy of integration with US and Australian naval operations."

This leak comes just on the heels of reports that the Pentagon is concerned about the possible gaps the Canadian navy would leave in the North Atlantic if it chose to follow through with the Lupo class purchase.

(*This report has not been confirmed by General Dynamics or the United States government, both were reached out for questions but declined to comment)

Reagan rallies Republican at Convention
Rival George H.W. Bush selected Vice President
Posted Image

Detroit, Michigan - Republican Nominee Governor Ronald Reagan was formally declared the Republic Party Nominee for President this past week at the Republican party convention held in Detroit Michigan. The Governor who wrapped up his parties nomination a few months ago has spent the past few months bombarding policies of the democrats on everything from economics to the policy of detente. After the democrats nominated Ted Kennedy as there nominee unseating Incumbent Jimmy Carter, polls show the democrats are more energized then ever for what Senator Kennedy has termed would be a "New Era of Liberalism in America". This has caused a equal energizing effect for the Republicans as Republicans selected a established conservative to lead there own party. Although, while polls showed Reagan easily handing a defeat to Preisdent Carter in a match up the newly energized Democratic party has the Liberal Lion Ted Kennedy and the Staunch conservative Ronald Reagan essential tied.

Although tensions regarding his vice president nearly brought the convention to a outright battle over the Vice Presidential ticket. Former President Gerald Ford wen on TV to announce on the opening day of the convention him and Reagan were in discussion over the possibility of him joining the ticket as Vice President using the term "Co-Presidency" while the Reagan camp was said to be mortified by the Interview the Republican party cheered what was expected to be an inevitable ticket. However after finally securing the nomination and taking the stage the Governor stunned the crowd by announcing his pick of his primary opponent George H.W. Bush to join his ticket. This was seen as a safe pick, a political balance as Bush is a moderate and Reagan is a conservative while Bush hails from the Southern State of Texas giving Geographical balance to the ticket.

The Governor took to his party's stage and declared the beginning of the end for the Liberal policies of Carter and Kennedy "America has suffered the past 3 and a half years under the term of President Carter, his left wing policies have brought America to it's knees. A economy in recession, a communist Soviet Union more empowered then ever to destroy the freedoms of other nations. These liberal policies have shown there weakness by making American citizens, diplomats or not vulnerable abroad as rogue state take our citizens hostage exploiting a weak government for there benefit. Today marks the beginning of the end not just for the policies of the Democratic party but for the spread of communism everywhere" announced the Governor.

United States Air force and Navy to Order More F-15's and F-14's After Canadian Decision

Posted Image

Washington D.C | USA -- Today Secretary of State appeared before the House committee on Foreign Relations and Armed Services to testify on the committees plan to authorize the Air Force and Navy to purchase an extra three billion dollars worth of F-15C's and F-14A's over the next few years. The committees proposal comes hot on the heels of the Canadian government refusing to purchase US fighters to replace it's archaic and ineffective aircraft. The committees plan would provide more aircraft to the US military and would offset any losses from Canada's decision.

This is what the Secretary of Defense said to the committee today.

Quote:

The purchase of roughly three billion dollars worth of aircraft would increase the ability of the US Air Force and Navy to low flight hours on their airframes which would allow these aircraft to last even longer. This has been a concern raised to me primarily by Naval officers who are worried about the allocation of flight hours on the early and limited number of airframes we currently have. A high number of flight hours on aircraft mean we need to do more maintenance and in some cases will have to completely remove the aircraft from service, limiting the US's war-fighting effectiveness.

This proposal would also offset the ill-fated choice of the Royal Canadian Air Force, though the roughly 3 billion dollars that the Canadian government planned to spend is already offset by the Australian purchase which is valued at roughly the same cost.

Carter welcomes back US Hostages as last victory of his administration
Declares a victory for diplomacy and the Democratic Party ahead of elections
Posted Image

Washington D.C. - President Jimmy Carter met the remaining US hostages that were held by the Iranian government for a year after the taking of the US embassy last year, meeting them as they touched down in D.C. the President applauded the hostages for there courageousness and resolve that they showed during there time in captivity. Speaking from the podium set up at Andrews Air Force base the President lauded the release of hostages as one of the last and one of his proudest moments during his Presidency " And so I say that thought this may very well be one of the last major victories and achievements that has occurred under my Presidency, an achievement that no doubt will be praised by some and criticized by others, I believe history will look back at this moment as a definitive victory for US diplomacy in a time where the shadow of war lingers over us so often. Without bloodshed, without the use of military forces our goal was achieved and that goal was to bring these men and woman home. If this is what history will say as my last major achievement as President, I will be proud to embrace that legacy." announced the President.

Continuing the President spoke firmly about the fact that the hostages were freed without the use of force. While not naming the Republican party specifically he stated "The voices of war did not prevail and those of us who believed from the beginning that a peaceful resolution could be achieved were proved correct. And I hope that this country will in the future beyond my Presidency continue to embrace the ideals of diplomacy and cooperation."

As the Election is days in the United States the polls remain tight between Democrat Ted Kennedy and Republican Ronald Reagan as the to spar over everything from economics to foreign affairs. Polls show that while many view the Iran agreement as a sign of US weakness and a symbol of the US bending to the will of terrorist, as the hostages were shown exiting the plane, Democratic received a jump in the polls attributed to the agreement. Kennedy hailed the agreement as proof that agreements could be reached without the use of force while Reagan slammed the deal calling it weak and tantamount to paying a ransom while also expressing his happiness overall at the safe return of US hostages. "We would of had these hostages home as well, and we would of achieved that without having to agree to remove any kind of sanctions. "I would have used military force without a doubt" stated Governor Reagan. As the US elections draw to a close in one of the most Important elections, with the candidates represent the far end of each political spectrum, the world waits to see who will lead the free world into the next decade.

Jeane Kirkpatrick to be Reagan's Secretary of State
First Woman to hold post is only rivaled by Reagan for her Hawkish views
Posted Image

Washington D.C. - Speaking at a press conference from his transitional seat of power in Washington, President-Elect Ronald Reagan announced Georgetown University professor and his foreign policy adviser Jeane Kirkpatrick would be his pick to serve as the 59th Secretary of State and the first woman to hold the position. The move came as a surprise to many and was not without criticism as many had expected former NATO Supreme Commander Alexander Haig to be the Reagan nominee for the State department while sources said Kirkpatrick was the President-Elects pick for the post of UN Ambassador. Also taking many conservative Republicans by surprise is that Kirkpatrick is a lifelong Democrat even though her foreign policy views are consider hawkish even to moderate republicans.

In 1979, Kirkpatrick wrote an essay for Commentary magazine titled "Dictatorships and Double Standards" in which she attacked the foreign policies of the Carter administration and the democratic party arguing that the Carter administration had a double standard when pushing for democratic liberalization of authoritarian regimes and yet not holding communist regimes to the same standard. She argued while the United States should support the democratization of autocratic countries, it should not be a condition of diplomatic relations when the state is facing a violent overthrow by a revolutionary regime. In response to her essay AFL-CIO's Tom Kahn slammed Mrs. Kirkpatrick for statements saying that while communist regimes were harder to eradicate, autocratic regimes "pose the more lethal threat to functioning democracies".

Her essay alienated her from much of her party but yet this essay has since been credited for seeing her in the position she is in now having her essay fall into the hands of then Candidate Ronald Reagan who liked her foreign policy views and brought her on as a lead foreign policy adviser. While Alexander Haig was expected among many to become Secretary of State, his confirmation to lead the state department came to doubt after many questioned his role in the Watergate scandal. Insiders however state that Reagan's first choice was always Kirkpatrick and that while Haig still might be considered for a position, it was congressional republicans that pushed more for his candidacy.

After choosing her as his nominee, the President-Elect held meetings with senate Republicans who expressed there concerns about the fact that she is a democrat and if her views would reflect that. Sources from the meeting have the President-Elect responding when asked by Senate Republicans about there concers. "I have no concern or worry about the fact that she is a Democrat, I was a Democrat myself until the age of 51 and she is handling foreign policy, not domestic policy, in that category she makes most of the congressional Republican's look like socialist. So im not so concerned". Mrs. Kirkpatrick thanked President-Elect Reagan for the opportunity and pledged to do her best to achieve the foreign policy goals of this administration and the United States promising a strict and strong state department.

Mrs. Kirkpatrick becomes the highest ranked woman in the government and the highest ranked in the history of the country putting her 4th in the line of succession to the US Presidency.

U.S. cuts aid to Nicaragua amid Sandinista-Contra conflict

Posted Image

Washington D.C.-

U.S. Secretary of State Jeane Kirkpatrick announced the halt of US foreign aid to Nicaragua amid rising tension and conflict between the socialist Sandinista Junta of National Reconstruction government in Nicaragua and a coalition of groups opposing it now being called by the US as "The Contras". Formerly under President Jimmy Carter, the US kept aid flowing to the central american nation despite a overthrow of the former government and establishing a revolutionary government in it's place stating that the aid was going to the citizens of Nicaragua and not to support revolutionary causes.

As the new US government has shifted dramatically to the right under President Ronald Reagan which has been reflected in the state department by Secretary Kirkpatrick, the United States halted all aid to the government today calling on the Sandinista government to enter into negotiations with the Contra groups and that it had a obligation to avoid a conflict in Central America. The state department said that Secretary Kirkpatrick reached out to neighboring Honduras and Costa Rica to express US resolve in the matter.

While the State department stopped short of declaring full out support for the contra groups, the statements released indicated strong sympathies to the contra cause. The US Ambassador to Nicaragua is said to have called on the Junta of National Reconstruction and the coordinator Daniel Ortega to express it's stern warning that a conflict in Nicaragua would be heavily monitored and scrutinized by the United States.
