U.S. steps up security level at military installations across Europe

WASHINGTON D.C. | United States -- Security conditions at U.S. military bases in Europe have been increased in the wake of the Ramstein attack, officials said Friday.

A U.S. official confirmed to WWN that U.S. military bases are now at "Force Protection Bravo," which is defined by the Pentagon as an "increased and predictable threat." It is the second-highest threat level on a five-tier scale used by the Department of Defense. U.S. military officials added Friday that the announcement, which comes in the aftermath of the attack on a U.S. airbase in Germany, was not the result of a specific threat but because the military had become concerned about several recent incidents.

"We have a general concern, that the Red Army Faction (RAF) is focusing on the uniformed military and law enforcement," Comey, a high-ranked U.S. military official in Germany, told WWN Thursday. Adding that the order to upgrade the threat level was signed by U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) headquarters, which oversees all U.S. military air operations and installations in the European theater.

"There is concern about the potential threat posed by violent homegrown extremists," said Captain Jeff Davis, spokesman for USAFE. Davis declined to specify the new security measures, but confirmed that they would not be limited to Ramstein airbase alone. "We will be taking measures at various installations," he added.

Analysts state that the change in threat level status could mean more checks of vehicles entering bases, and more thorough identity checks of all personnel. Davis emphasized that "for the time being this is the new normal, that we are going to have increased vigilance and force protection. We seek to be unpredictable." He further confirmed that aside from procedural changes, structural changes to the installations themselves are also included in the plan to increase security at U.S. installations across Europe.
