Agha Shahi Minister of Foreign Affairs The Government of Pakistan Esteemed delegates to the OIC, A recent discussion regarding India's gross and illegitimate aggression has brought up an interesting and important topic which I feel compelled introduce. Increasingly, global politics have arrayed in such a way as to view the Islamic world as a playing field in the juxtaposition of the great global powers. Even though Islam is represented by dozens of sovereign states that collectively are immeasurably powerful, those who wish to tear the pious Islamic nations of the world asunder continue to transgress upon us, using our disunity and aversion to meaningful collaboration in an environment of mutual trust and friendship to exploit the Islamic community and all of the resources that we have been blessed with. India is but one example, most salient to Pakistan; Israel, Iran, the USSR, and the West have all taken turns sapping the strength of Islam for their own benefits. Pakistan recognizes that the purpose of the OIC is not to provide for a military alliance, however, we feel it is necessary to expand military collaboration with our friends among the OIC within the larger framework of legitimacy that the organization provides. To those ends, we would propose a conference for any interested or curious parties to discuss the establishment of a separate security framework to provide for increased collaboration between the various powers of the Muslim world. An ideal arrangement would provide for regular multilateral military exercises; increased collaboration in training, procurement, research and development, and defence production; and expanded intelligence sharing measures, alongside greater economic cooperation. Pakistan would point out that we are capable of supplying the Gulf with all of its expatriate worker needs, with the added benefit of increased cultural, religious, and linguistic awareness on the part of Pakistani expats. Pakistan feels that there is much to gain from expanded collaboration. The Muslim world, collectively, has the strength to bolster and improve itself far beyond any collaboration with an outside power. Although we do not wish to alter the status-quo of non-alignment, Pakistan is adamant in our belief that incremental steps can and must be taken to improve collaboration of all sorts between Muslim powers, and believes that a network of organizations, united by common membership and allegiance to the larger mission of the OIC, is best suited to serve this purpose. Thank you. |
