![]() The Honorable Senator Gareth Evans 33rd Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Secretary MacGuigan, On behalf of the Australian Government and the Australian people welcome to Australia, the Prime Minister wishes to extend his greatest apologies on not being able to attend this meeting as he is in Washington D.C. Australia and Canada in the past have not always seen eye to eye and like any relationships there were bumps along the road however when Australia and Canada have a common enemy, interest or goal to acheive or defeat, it is then Mr Secretary, the best of our relationship is shown. The past years are history and as we move forward with solidarity in repairing this damaged relationship, we do not forget our mistakes we have made in the past, we learn from them and try to mend them. In this meeting on which you as our esteemed guest has joined us, we wish to discuss possible trade links between Australia-Canada, how we can further enhance and share our culture and a youth/student exchange program between Australia-Canada. |

![]() 17th Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Senator Evans, On behalf of the Canadian Government, I thank your people for the warm welcome to Canberra. I understand Prime Minister Keating's reason for his absence, and I'm sure we'll get along well without him. I agree that our two nations have issues to work out, and it is my utmost concern to work them out. As for the proposed student exchange program, where would you like to start? I would like to propose exchange programs between Australian and Canadian universities and colleges, such as Queens University in Kingston or Algonquin College in Ottawa. The Australian Government would like to propose the composition of the exchange students:
The Australian Government believe that the exchange of medical and technological students will both advance and improve both the Canadian and Australian Medical and Technological industries. We further believe that the exchange of a Cultural Center will bolster our long standing cultural relations as Commonwealth partners and further enhance the rich diversity of both Australia and Canada. |
