The Government of Pakistan

To begin, I would like to thank the delegation from the People's Republic of China for their attendance, and express Pakistan's deepest desire that the already close relationship between Pakistan and the People's Republic can continue to blossom, especially in the realm of trade. These are the ends for which Pakistan has initiated these talks, with the hope of developing and implementing a comprehensive framework for mutual economic integration through the reduction and elimination of barriers to cross-border trade, investment in necessary and vital infrastructure to facilitate land- and air-based commerce, and encouragement of bilateral investment into industry and services for the mutual benefit of both Pakistan and China.

In 1979, the Karakoram Highway, a massive collaborative effort between China and Pakistan and the first paved, dual-lane access restricted overland route connecting our two countries. In the years that followed, this single project alone has fostered previously unheard of economic growth and development in Pakistan, especially those areas of the northern provinces surrounding the highway approaching the border. It is our dream that future collaboration can expand these benefits to all of Pakistan. The People's Republic of China is a strong economy, but would benefit greatly from the continual expansion of access to Pakistan's vast and untapped natural resources, in terms of both agriculture and produce, as well as petroleum and natural gas, coal, copper, iron, gemstones, hydroelectric, and myriad others, much of which remains unexploited due to chronic underfunding and lack of investment. The government of President Muhammed Zia-ul-Haq is dedicated to changing this, and views China as a vital strategic partner in that regard.

I will now turn the floor over to the delegation from the People's Republic of China for opening statements. Thank you again.
