The Luftwaffe of the Future German Air Force looks to replace aging fighters Bonn, WEST GERMANY -- After a flurry of recent meetings between West German Federal Ministry of Defense officials and those from the U.S. Department of Defense and weapons contractors, the FMoD has begun to look towards retiring the aging F-104 Starfighter. The F-104 is more commonly known as the Widowmaker for the high amount of casualties and crashes involved with the program. Even after new training techniques in the Luftwaffe that included a training program in the United States, there was still a high amount of crashes and fatalities involved with the airframe. The fighter competition to replace them may already be over. The Luftwaffe and the FMoD seemed primarily interested in the American F-15s and F-14s. The range and role played a large factor. With what the Luftwaffe viewed as an increasing technological threat from the East. However, after the most recent meetings, a new player had come off the street to seal the deal. The Luftwaffe is now turning the the new American F-15C. With the fast high- and low-altitude speed and the large combat range, the F-15C will prove to be the largest and baddest fighter jet on the European Continent. ![]() "The amount of posturing coming from the East, in addition to the aging and increasing threat from the use of the F-104, has driven Bonn to seek out and secure a replacement for the F-104. They will increase the safety of the airspace over West Germany and NATO in the region." Minister Hans Apel quoted to Die Welt in an interview earlier this week. With the advancement of NATO airpower, it remains to be seen how the East will seek to connive their recent spat of instability towards the German State. |
