Statement by the National Security Advisor to the President

The Government is monitoring the situation in an optimistic manner that newly-formed the North Korean leadership is willing to engage the talks to ensure denuclearization and halt of missile program. However we're deeply concerned about the recent military exercises, mainly the artillery fires, has been affected to the South Korean territorial waters. The Government will not tolerate any provocative action against the territory of South Korea.

We are also monitoring the situation regarding Sino-North Korean agreement which has been came in effect recently. Even though the North Korean authorities are willing to engage the talk and it is promising change for South Korea and neighboring countries, however, the recent agreement could harm the effect of recent sanctions decided and made by the United Nations. The official stance on South Korean government is to set North Korea into the meeting table, not the resumption of nuclear program. We're deeply regretful about the Chinese government's decision.

Nonetheless, the Government will pursue the peace on Korean Peninsula and will use any means to bring North Korea to the table.

Statement from the Office of the President of the Republic of Korea

Statements on Deployments at the Demilitarized Zone & Negotiations with the North

On the orders of President Moon Jae-in, two divisions of the Republic of Korea Army will be redeployed back to their garrisons and away from the Demilitarized Zone. This is to be done in cooperation with the government in Pyongyang, which has recently withdrawn the 15th KPA Division, following progress in bilateral negotiations between the governments of the North and South.

Additional news from the summit is that an agreement has been reached to allow for President Moon and Marshal Kim to meet, as well as tour several sites in both North and South Korea. The sites are to be determined but are expected to include visits to historical sites that are vital to our collective Korean culture and heritage.
