Small Protests Break Out After Conscription Plans Leaked

Baghdad, Iraq- Small protests began to break out among Sunni Iraqis today near the International Zone in Iraq over the suggestion from the Ministry of Defense to implement conscription for the Popular Mobilization Forces. "If we wanted to join the military, we would have joined the military," said one Iraqi, "Ever since the Shias have taken over, they have tried more and more to make the Sunni's serve the Shi'a, this has to stop!" While protests remain small and no arrests have been made, public outcry is beginning to mount.

Elsewhere in Basra, protests also have broken out among a moderate Shias community as well, who are joined hand in hand with Mohammed Pachachi, the Sunni son of Adnan Pachachi, a famous statesmen for Iraq known for wanting to end sectarianism. Mohammed Pachachi led the protest in calling for an end to sectarianism, and the end of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's reign, who recently won reelection by a large margin.

It remains to be seen whether conscription will actually be enacted, and whether the protests will raise in severity.

Further questions and comments can be directed to Aswat al-Iraq's offices in Baghdad.
