Today is the start of the election race for the Iraqi governorate elections, that is scheduled for 20 April 2013. Elections will take place in 15 of Iraqs 18 governorates, with the 3 governorates forming the Kurdistan Region not taking part, meaning that a total of 447 provincial council seats will be up for election. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's State of Law Coalition has widened since the parliamentary elections, and are expected to take a majority of the council seats as well as governorships. It is expected that the elections will be fought between three coalitions, two more sectarian sides (Shia and Sunni) as well as a more joint secular coalition. Al Iraqiya will continue to give updates until the election. |

The parliamentary elections of 2014 seems to be colored by the situation in Syria and the growing dispute between Baghdad and Iraqi Kurdistan about just how much regional autonomy that the constitution grants. Sources indicate that the council of ministers plans to take visible measures in response to both issues in order to increase their visibility and curry favor among shia voters. Al Iraqiya will continue to give updates until the election. |
