![]() NEW YORK SUMMIT ____________________ President of the United States _____ I would like to welcome the representatives of both the Republic of India and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. I believe that we have a difficult task ahead of us, but that this task requires the utmost commitment from all sides, as it is the best interest of all to come to an agreement on demilitarizing the Line of Control (LoC). In the past months we have seen both sides take action to build up troop strength along the so called LoC, this worrisome development came after various small firefights between forces stationed along this volatile border. The world saw large troop deployments into Kashmir and as a direct result of this the tensions spiked. Currently both Pakistan and India have deployed considerable amounts of troop along the LoC, something that is not desirable. Washington would like to see what both Islamabad and New Delhi would like to see in return for a significant reduction of forces in the region of Kashmir. I have to stress that the proposals that will be put forward during these talks will need to be realistic and feasible. The first and foremost matter to be addressed is the scaling down of military assets in the region of Kashmir. Washington is very keen to prevent yet another armed conflict between both Islamabad and New Delhi, as such is not deemed in the interest of the region, or even the entire international community. Once I have heard the wishes of both sides, Washington will mediate the talks in order to find a solution to this situation. Thank you. |

Islamabad does not condone terrorism and does not support it. However, we also support freedom of people's everywhere. Regardless of what New Delhi has spoken of, there are a large amount of peoples, easily the majority, who do not wish to be under Indian rule in Kashmir. As such, we cannot ignore their pleas for freedom and we will support any peaceful movement in that region. As for troop reductions, we agree overflights should be cancelled. However, Helicopters must still be allowed as they provide critical support in medevac and resupply. |

Prime Minister of India Pakistan may very well think that about Kashmir, its worth noting that there is far less of a desire for further autonomy from either of our governments in the Buddhist areas of the territory, but we're not discussing the final status of Kashmir, the Hindu refugees forced out of Pakistan over the last five decades, or solving all of our bilateral problems with the stroke of a pen. Pakistan does deserve credit for banning Lashkar-e-Taiba contrary to their policy of deliberately funding and training the group in the 1990's, but its universally known that one of the places they operate is out of camps within Pakistan proper so we're glad you are open to clamping down even further on the LeT. As long as the helicopters are unarmed this is fine and certainly in the spirit of any aircraft grounding. While it would be nice to reach some sort of final status agreement someday, I think we now have the broad outlines of an agreement to deescalate this situation. Shall I have a more specific treaty drafted for signing? |
