Dorit Golender Ambassador to the Russian Federation State of Israel The State of Israel would like to express its thoughts in regards to certain statements made by the Russian government in regards to the recent killing of an Iranian nuclear in Northern Tehran. Certain wording utilized by the Russian government was insulting and went blatantly against relatively stable Russian policy towards Israel. I will now, at the request of my government, address certain aspects brought forward in this press release. First I would like to assure the international community that the government of Israel had nothing to do with the killing and that the killing is detrimental to negotiations underway with the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Russian government stated that, and I quote, "Rhetoric from other states accusing Iran of belligerency is unhelpful and further it is worth noting that Iran has yet to engage in any hostilities against Israel or any other power." This is also not true. It has been proven time and time again that the Iranian government has provided the militant organizations of Hezbollah and Hamas with weapons, munitions, training, and even manpower from the Revolutionary Guard in the past. We are not making allegations that this is currently the policy of Tehran, but the past has shown that they have held a policy of active and direct support for organizations with the intent on destroying our country. Next the Russian government states, and I quote again, that "Further it is worth noting that the "State of Israel" has engaged in far more attacks against regional stability and security than Iran and has contributed to a greater rise in regional tensions than the Islamic Republic of Iran." Again this is not true: the State of Israel has conducted operations when necessary to ensure the maintenance of our national security and national sovereignty. The so called "reactionary behavior" that Russia has accused Israel of conducting, and which they have attempted to use as proof towards their false and, frankly, insulting allegations do not exist. All actions taken by the State of Israel have been following either open military attacks against our soil and our citizens or the serious and real threat of such attacks. We have, on many occasions, worked to negotiate with the Arab States in the region; and have made progress with our friends in Amman and Cairo. We are hoping to continue to make progress and to continue negotiations with regional partners across our region. In contrast, Russia has conducted a war of open aggression against the Syrian people; operations so deadly that even President Assad's government, a government known for human rights abuses in the past during this civil war and before, has attempted to distance itself from Russia. Assad has gone as far as to demand the removal of Russian troops from Syria, something which Russia is required to do given the fact that it recognizes Assad's government as the legitimate government of Syria. If Russia refuses the removal of its forces it will then be considered a foreign invasion of the Syrian Arab Republic by the State of Israel and relations will be reconsidered further as a result. This brings us to my next point. The Russian Federation used quotation marks when speaking about the State of Israel. We hope that this was done in error as it would lead many to believe that Russia no longer recognizes the State of Israel as legitimate due to the fact that that is the same way many countries who do not recognize us refer to us. I find it extremely disturbing and surprising that the Russian Federation, a country who has over the past years been a close political and military partner with Israel, has suddenly conducted such a dramatic change in its policy towards our country. Not even a year ago Israel and Russia maintained a close relationship which included the sale of Israeli technology to the Russian Armed Forces and the use of Israeli advisors to provide advise to Russian military personnel in regards to urban combat and counter-terrorism tactics. I can assure Moscow that if this erratic policy changing continues that the Knesset will be extremely reluctant to continue any sort of military cooperation with Russia. I demand a response from Moscow in regards to these allegations, and I would like Moscow to explain its blatant insults and allegations against the Israeli government. |

Minister of Foreign Affairs The Russian Foreign Ministry understands the issues these statements have created, and on behalf of the Russian Government they are fully retracted. The Russian Federation would like to reaffirm its recognition of Israel as a free and sovereign state, and our intention was never to question Israel's existence or sovereignty. We understand that any measures undertaken by the State of Israel militarily are indeed meant to protect your nations national security and sovereignty, however in certain cases such as the recent aircraft operations conducted by the Israeli Air Force we beg to differ. Nevertheless, we offer our apology to the State of Israel for any unintended insults, and can assure the State of Israel that we intend on continuing our strong relations and building atop of them as foundations for even greater cooperation in the future. |
