![]() Permanent Representative to the UN I have been instructed from Havana that my government would be capable and willing to supply nearly 3,000 personnel yearly from various military branches to assist UN Peacekeeping Operations globally. We would specifically like to assist the Federative Republic of Brazil in Haiti and replace their troops as they slowly pull out of Haiti, in order to keep numbers stable. I yield my time to the chair. |

_____ While we support the initiative shown by Cuba, we at this moment feel that it is unnecessary to expand the mandate and troop limits for the MINUSTAH mission. The current number of troops are sufficient to fulfill the role assigned to the force, and we believe the benefits of 3,000 additional troops do not outweigh the costs that the UN has to make for approving this extended mandate. |
