Friday 18 July Heat, humidity and thunderstorms Remaining hot and humid through the remainder of Friday and into the weekend. Temperatures reaching a maximum of between 30C and 33C in the next 24 to 48 hours Further risk of severe thunderstorms on a more widespread scale expected during Saturday across England and Wales in particular Risk of travel disruption due to localised torrential downpours and frequent lightning Remaining showery throughout the coming weekend, but somewhat cooler and fresher by Sunday. Friday Overnight rain and thunderstorms will continue to clear northwards into parts of N Ireland and Scotland with then many areas of England and Wales becoming hot, humid and with some sunny spells. The high temperatures and humidity may well spark a few isolated severe thunderstorms by the late afternoon across parts of the Midlands and N England in particular. However, the main threat of thunderstorms develops from the south through the night with potentially severe storms developing over N France and then drifting northwards after midnight. Saturday A particularly stormy day is expected across England and Wales from Saturday morning onwards. Scattered locally severe thunderstorms are likely to be in evidence across many central and southern areas of England and Wales first thing and these then erratically spreading and developing as they track northwards. Many areas are at risk across England and Wales of torrential rainfall leading to flash flooding, frequent and intense lightning activity, along with hail and gusty winds. However, as is the usual case the storms will be “hit and miss” and not everywhere will see them, so pin-pointing exactly which areas are at greatest remains very difficult and a generally widespread threat of severe storms occurring covers most of England and Wales and later up into S Scotland. Sunday A day of sunshine and showers is expected to continue on Sunday as overnight thunderstorms and longer spells of rain across more eastern areas of the UK clears away. Some of the showers during Sunday afternoon may well once again become heavy with some thunderstorms in places, but these aren’t expected to be as severe as is possible on Saturday. That being said, for some areas further torrential downpours and lightning is possible during the course of Sunday afternoon and the main areas at risk, at the moment, are across parts of Scotland and E England. Potential severe weather and temperature The main emphasis is definitely on the threat of severe storms on Saturday which will no doubt bring some particularly inclement conditions locally and more regionally due to flash flooding from torrential rainfall and lightning activity too. Conditions will then remain potentially severe on Sunday afternoon in places given further heavy showers and thunderstorms, but extra care should be taken if travelling or under-taking any outdoor activities on Saturday in particular. Temperatures will reach highs of up to 30C to 33C on Friday in particular across more urban areas of the south and south-east of England, whilst many areas of England and Wales see maximum temperatures of at least 24C or 25C, but somewhat cooler further for Scotland and Ireland. An exceptionally warm and uncomfortable night is set to follow for England and Wales into Saturday and the humidity will persist. Temperatures over the weekend generally ranging between 20C and 25C for most areas, but temperatures may still reach the high 20’s or low 30’s across eastern England for a time on Saturday.
