Bulk carrier Amakusa Island holed in grounding, Prince Rupert July 18, 2014 Bulk carrier Amakusa Island suffered hull damage and water ingress when running aground in Prince Rupert on July 14. Vessel is loaded with 80000 tons of coal, authorities and salvors don’t know yet how to go on with salvage, whether to pump out water and patch the hull on the road, or take vessel to the berth. As of 0500 UTC July 18 vessel remained at anchor. Grounding news: Japanese bulk carrier Amakusa Island ran aground in Prince Rupert Japanese bulk carrier Amakusa Island ran aground shortly after 2200 LT July 14, in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada. Vessel left coal terminal and ran aground while proceeding to anchorage, developing a visible list after grounding. Amakusa Island was refloated some four hours after the grounding with high tide, assisted by tugs, and anchored in safe waters.
