Russian Cargo Ship Catches Fire Southeast of Vladivostok BY ROB ALMEIDA ON AUGUST 8, 2014 ![]() Emergency vehicles on scene in Vladivostok, image via Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations On 7 August, the 106-meter Russian-flagged cargo ship Sea Champion was disabled due to an engine room fire while operating in the Sea of Japan approximately 120 kilometers ESE from Vladivostok. The crew subsequently evacuated on to a fishing boat that came to their aid. Shortly thereafter, the burning ship was taken under tow by the vessel Lazurit to the port of Vladivostok where firefighters managed to put out the blaze on 8 August. The ship was carrying a cargo of containers and automobiles from Vladivostok to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and was at that time seven miles off Cape Povorotny (Port Nakhodka) according to ITAR TASS. One crew member died as a result of the fire. Source...
