Monday 11 August 9am Cool and showery A cool and showery week ahead for many areas, some of the showers heavy and thundery at times Risk of longer spells of rain in the north, especially on Monday and into Tuesday A windy week for the time of year, especially up to mid-week with strong winds and local gales Feeling particularly cool for mid-August with temperatures below average and this accentuated by the wind and unsettled conditions A mainly dry end to the week is currently expected and feeling a little warmer for most by Friday Monday to Wednesday ![]() The first half of the week will be dominated by an area of low pressure situated to the north and north-east of the country. This will produce a cool and blustery west or north-westerly wind over many areas of the British Isles. Each day will see a mixture of sunshine and showers, these will be locally heavy and perhaps thundery into the afternoon, but given the strength of the wind these will pass through quickly. Some particularly heavy and persistent rain is expected today though across central and northern areas of Scotland where over 70mm or 80mm of rainfall is possible with a significant risk of flooding. The areas at risk of flooding have been highlighted. These longer spells of rain will filter south into N England into Tuesday but the rain generally becoming more showery by that time. Thursday and Friday The end of the week maintains a general showery theme, particularly so on Thursday when, once again, the day will see a mixture of sunshine and showers, these locally heavy and perhaps thundery in places during the afternoon. The wind will be lighter by Thursday however and it will feel warmer as a result, especially for those areas that miss the showers. At the moment the week is expected to end mainly dry with just a few showers but otherwise most areas will be dry, bright and feeling warm. Severe weather and temperatures Severe weather is expected today (Monday) across northern areas of the UK due to heavy rainfall leading to a risk of flooding across parts of Scotland and strong winds and gales remain a risk across northern areas as well. Some localised severe weather is possible at times this week in association with heavy showers and thunderstorms, but this risk reducing as the week progresses. A particularly cool week for mid-August with highs ranging between 15C and 20C generally and it will be quite chilly by night too, especially across rural areas of the north.
