Week Ahead Weather - is the summer over? Monday, August 11, 2014, Monday, August 11, 2014, Ex-hurricane Bertha swept across the UK yesterday, bringing heavy and rain and gusty winds to much of the country. The area of low pressure that spawned from the remnants of Bertha has now anchored itself in the northern North Sea, giving strong winds and persistent heavy rain to northern Scotland through today. Unfortunately, this low pressure system isn’t going anywhere fast and will influence the UK’s weather for much of this week, staying in the North Sea until at least Friday. As such, it will be a changeable week with some frequent and heavy showers at times. As winds travel around low pressure systems in an anti-clockwise direction, winds will be from the north-west for much of this week and as such it will be rather cool for this time of year. Tuesday Scotland will continue to be cloudy with outbreaks of rain, some heavy across western areas. While the totals won’t be anywhere near as high as during Sunday and Monday, 15-25mm of rain is still expected in places, which will exacerbate the risk of flooding in these areas. Elsewhere, there will be sunny spells and scattered showers, some heavy and thundery in places by the afternoon and evening. Western areas and along the south coast will see the most frequent showers with the East Midlands and East Anglia likely to see the best of the sunshine. Temperatures in the mid to high teens generally and feeling particularly cool across Scotland with the rain and strong breeze. Wednesday The persistent rain across Scotland should have cleared to leave much of the UK with sunny spells and scattered showers. Again, the showers will be locally heavy and thundery, but south-east England shouldn’t see too many in the way of showers. Northern Ireland should also escape the worst of the showers too. With the north-westerly wind easing just a touch and with more in the way of sunshine between the showers in the north, temperatures will be up a couple of degrees of Tuesday’s values. Thursday Another day of sunshine and showers is expected on Thursday, however the showers are likely to be heavier and more frequent across southern areas compared to the rest of the week. Again, some thunderstorms are likely to develop into the afternoon, with southern England, the Midlands and Wales most at risk. Northern Scotland could also be pelted by frequent showers too. Temperatures again will be fairly disappointing for early August with the low 20s Celsius at best in the south and much cooler further north. Friday With the low pressure responsible for the week’s unsettled weather expected to clear off east towards Scandinavia overnight into Friday, it should be a much drier day for many. However, the low pressure will still be close enough to allow some showers to develop into the afternoon, with southern and eastern areas of the UK most at risk. Another fairly cool day with temperatures ranging from 15C in the north to 20C in the south. Winds will fall light overnight as a ridge of high pressure builds in, and as such it could be rather chilly by Saturday morning. It may even be cold enough for a touch of grass frost in some rural spots. The weekend There’s some uncertainty regarding the weekend at the moment, but Saturday looks the best day for many with largely dry conditions and spells of sunshine. However, cloud and rain looks likely to edge into the north-west later in the day with showery conditions likely for many on Sunday. Temperatures will remain on the cool side for mid-August too. The rest of August Unfortunately indications are that conditions will remain fairly changeable and unsettled into next week with most of the rain across northern and western areas. The best of any drier weather is likely to be in the south and east. Winds are expected to turn to a more westerly direction and as such, temperatures should return to near normal levels with some warmth possible in the south and east at times.
