The cool weather from the north will be with us until Sunday

The rather cool northerly flow will persist until the weekend with the risk of further chilly nights and local ground frosts. Temperatures on Wednesday morning dipped to between 2 and 3C some rural areas.

On Thursday an area of low pressure will spin up in the cool northern flow and move south across Scotland. This will bring more frequent showers to northern Britain with some more general rain moving down to Scotland to northern England. There will be a band of showers in the south, but most southern areas will stay dry with some sunshine. Temperatures only 12 to 16C in the north, but may touch 20C in the southeast.

By Friday low pressure will be to our east again with cool northerly winds again. There will be quite a few showers in the north and some longer spells of rain in the northeast. It'll be mostly fine and sunny over southern England and Wales. Temperatures 19 to 20C in sheltered parts of the south a a rather cool 13 to 16C in Scotland.

During Saturday pressure will begin to build from the west so any showers in the west will be light and isolated, but the eastern half of the country will still be in cool northwesterly winds with scattered showers developing. It'll be cold enough over the higher tops in the Scottish Highlands for a little sleet and wet snow in the showers.

Overnight Saturday to Sunday skies will clear with light winds allowing temperatures to fall quite low. Dawn temperatures on Sunday will widely be in low single figures with the risk of local air frosts in Scotland, and temperatures down to 0C. Through the day on Sunday most areas will be dry with sunny spells and light winds, but rain is likely to reach the west of Wales and southwest England by late afternoon. It'll become quite wet overnight as rain moves east, with many areas catching 8 to 10mm or rainfall.
