Bulk carrier Phoenix Sun manager replies to allegations, Canada

August 24, 2014

Bulk carrier Phoenix Sun is docked in Sorel-Tracy, Que., since at least Dec 2013.

Vessel is bound to be dismantled, most probably to be towed to scrap yards in Turkey, Pakistan, India or Bangladesh.

12 Turkish crew boarded the vessel in April to prepare her for her last trip. On Aug 21 the vessel hits the headlines of Canadian media.

Media say crew is not paid for two months and is short of food, calling the crew “abandoned”.

Media was led of course, by indignant the Seafarers’ International Union of Canada (SIU), backed by ITF.

Usually in situations like this one ship owners and crew managers are not cited and interviewed, but in this case manager was able to reply to accusations via CBC News:

He said that allegations are false, and that "There is no such suffering," adding that food shipments he has sent to the crew were being intercepted and cancelled by the union – a highly probable event, I can say, knowing the ways, methods and morals of trade unionists.

Two months wage delay is not something unheard of, or something tragic, but the main point is, the owner or manager must have a chance to explain himself and to give a different view on the situation and trade unions activities.

In most cases, he doesn’t have a chance to say something in his defence.
