The U.S. Department of Defense reports today the crew of a U.S. Coast Guard rigid hulled inflatable boat (RHIB) fired at an Iranian dhow yesterday while operating in international waters within the Persian Gulf.

U.S. military officials say this was a defensive move after the crew of the dhow aimed a machine gun at them with what they interpreted as hostile intent.

The RHIB was operating from the Island-class USCG cutter Monomoy and had been dispatched to query the Iranian dhow.

Only one shot was fired by the Coast Guard and it’s unclear whether or not the round hit the Iranian vessel.

According to the DoD, the vessel left the scene and did not communicate with the American crew.
