UK daily outlook - 9 to 10 October

By Leon Brown, Chief Meteorologist

Low pressure will continue to influence the main weather pattern through to the end of this week. Expect frequent heavy and squally showers on Thursday but a much calmer and drier Friday, with some sunny spells as that low begins to fill and move away from the north.

Thursday looks set to be another showery day as low pressure migrates eastwards, becoming centred over the UK. Heavy squally and thundery showers will be mainly over the west, and especially over Wales to north-west England, where again cracks of thunder and possibly hail are likely. The south east of England and East Anglia will have a better day with periods of brightness but those showers will push in from the west during the afternoon. There will be fresh south-westerly winds with gusts up to 40mph along the English Channel. Temperatures will reach 17C in the south east, but still a cool 10C in Scotland.

We'll have a slightly better day on Friday as winds ease and showers become lighter and more scattered, but still a few heavier showers over northern England, Scotland and Wales. There will be isolated showers in the south. It'll be drier towards the east with bright or sunny spells. Temperatures will near average, reaching 15 to 18C in the south and 12 to 14C in the north.
Frequent and heavy showers

Low pressure to the west of Ireland will push a lot of showers north east over the next few days, but gradually the showers will ease for the end of the week and weekend. There are some chilly nights to come, and fog this weekend. You'll probably have to put the heating on now.

An area of persistent and moderate to heavy rain over northern Scotland tonight and early Wednesday will continue to bring a flood risk. By Wednesday morning 24-hr rainfall totals may be in excess of 60 to 80mm over the eastern slopes of the northern Highlands.

Further south Wednesday should start bright and dry over southern Scotland and north east England, but bands of rain and showers will sweep north east across England and Wales. There will be some heavy downpours, and the risk of hail and thunder too. The showers will eventually reach north east England and southern Scotland late in the day. The rain over northern Scotland will die out and move to the north. Gusty south west winds over southern Britain will make it feel cool. Temperatures 16 to 17C between the showers.

More showers to end the week on Friday, moving across central and northern Britain, the showers lighter and more scattered over the south. Temperatures again near 17C in central and eastern England, and possibly 18C in the south east, but a few degrees lower over the north and west.
