An unsettled and rather cold day is expected for many areas of England and Wales with outbreaks of rain at times. Some heavy and persistent rain is expected across more southern and south-western areas of England with perhaps up to 40mm possible across parts of Cornwall, Devon and Somerset. There is also the risk of some large rainfall totals developing across more eastern and south-eastern areas of England too with perhaps up to 20mm to 30mm generally. Areas at risk of some significant rainfall totals through today are highlighted on the associated graphic. A strong and gusty wind is expected across N England in particular through the day and this will accentuate the cold feel. Across Scotland and Ireland it will be mainly dry with bright or sunny spells after a chilly start.
Tuesday

Another rather cloudy day is expected across England and Wales with outbreaks of rain still possible, but this becoming increasingly light and patchy. A chilly NE’ly wind will continue too so another cold-feeling day is to be expected across most of England and Wales. Scotland and Ireland will start chilly with rural frost and fog patches; otherwise it is then another dry day with bright or sunny spells and light winds.
Wednesday

By Wednesday it is expected to become increasingly wet and windy across southern and western areas through the day with outbreaks of rain slowly moving northwards. Ahead of this another mainly dry day is expected across Scotland. It is expected to feel chilly in a strengthening SE’ly wind across most areas.
Thursday and Friday

The week is expected to end generally unsettled with the risk of some heavy showers across England and Wales on Thursday and with some rain across Scotland. Into Friday and some drier and brighter conditions are expected to develop across England and Wales, but it is then likely to turn increasingly wet and windy across Ireland through the day and these wet and windy conditions are then forecast to move eastwards later in the day and overnight into Saturday.
Temperatures and severe weather

Temperatures this week starting off quite cold, especially in the wind and rain but temperatures then rising through the week. Maximum temperatures ranging 10-14°C are expected on Monday and Tuesday but from Wednesday onwards maximum temperatures ranging 14-18°C.

Primary risk of severe weather is from the heavy and persistent rainfall across parts of England today with some localised flooding possible. Some severe weather may then develop later in the week as further wet and windy weather develops.
