Hurricane Gonzalo heads our way
Gales and heavy rain, but no need for panic

By Simon Keeling in Wombourne, Staffs 14:30hrs 17/10/2014

Hurricane Gonzalo is threatening Bermuda, but as it tracks north and gets whisked up by the jet stream, it will be the UK and Ireland which gets a battering from the remnants of it next week.

Current forecast place Gonzalo through the UK and Ireland on Tuesday. As it sweeps east it could bring with it heavy rain and gale force winds.

Now, it's important not to go overboard with this one, as no doubt some newspapers might. It's perfectly normal for the remains of ex-hurricanes to hit the UK at this time of year, and they frequently bring wind and rain with them.

We are currently advising that there is a risk of some localised flooding from Gonzalo, and that winds could gust in excess of 60mph on western coasts and hills as the feature tracks east on Tuesday.

However, ex-Gonzalo won't last long, so be prepared for a hit of bad weather for a few hours, but there's no need to panic.
