UK daily outlook - 17 to 19 October.

By Michael de Villiers, Senior Meteorologist

A large area of low pressure over the Atlantic will control our weather for the next few days with bands of rain swinging north east followed by some heavy showers. Warmth will be drawn northwards from Iberia, with temperatures 3 to 6C above normal until Sunday in the south of the UK.

A cold front is expected to be lying south west-north east from south west England to the Wash on Saturday with light rain from Devon to Hampshire and extending north to the south and East Midlands to Lincolnshire. Some heavier showers are possible in the Hampshire and west Sussex area.

To the north there will be a mixture of sunshine and showers over Wales, north England and Scotland with heavy and thundery showers in the north west. The showers will be light over Wales. It will be windy with fresh to strong southerly winds too. It should feel quite warm, with temperatures 18 to 20C across central to eastern England, and 21C in a few spots, well above the average. And in the mid to high teens elsewhere but feeling colder in the wind over the north.

It now looks like the cold front will clear from the south east of England early on Sunday with a mainly fine and dry day for central and southern England, and east Wales. There will be plenty of sunshine too. Further north it will be windy with frequent and heavy showers over north west England and west Scotland. There will be a few showers over west Wales.

Expect strong west winds with gales over coasts and hills in west Scotland - gusts around 50 to 60mph. It will still feel warm in the south and East of England, reaching 18 to 19C in the south east, and perhaps 20C in East Anglia; cooler further north with temperatures 12 to 15C in Scotland.

There will be a moderate to fresh and gusty westerly wind everywhere on Monday, feeling cooler. Western Scotland will have fresh to strong winds. We'll see sunny spells and light showers across the north and west, with a spell of heavier and more persistent rain later over west Scotland. It'll be mainly dry from east Wales across the Midlands to south east England, but also quite cloudy after a sunny start. Temperatures will be down to nearer the average, ranging from 10-13C across Scotland and 13-16C across England and Wales.

The remains of Hurricane Gonzalo will arrive over the UK on Tuesday. The latest forecasts suggest some heavy rain and strong to gale force winds, with 20 to 40mm of rain, across the UK on Tuesday morning.
