Hurricane Gonzalo raises the stakes
Are Ireland & UK set for a Tuesday battering?

By Simon Keeling in Wombourne, Staffs 09:30hrs 18/10/2014

Hurricane Gonzalo has scored a direct hit on the Island of Bermuda overnight, and now has Europe in its sights.

The chart at the bottom of the page shows the forecast position of the remnants of Gonzalo by 7am on Tuesday morning. Heavy rain surrounds an area of low pressure which will be crossing Scotland at that time.

We need to be on watch for storm force winds bringing the threat of some minor damage, and heavy rain with associated flooding throughout the period from Monday night to Tuesday night. Wind gusts on such a feature may exceed 70mph, and it's not impossible, given the current forecast, that gusts of over 60mph may be recorded inland.

The main concern for us meteorologists as of today (Saturday) is the apparent slowing in the movement of Gonzalo as it crosses the country. This enhances the impact of the strong winds and heavy rain.

For now there's still no reason to be too concerned, but if you have loose items in the garden, a shed roof that needs fixing or drains that need clearing, then now is probably the time to be doing that.

Of course we will keep you updated on developments here at Weatherweb.net .
