After hitting Bermuda and Newfoundland over the last few days, the remnants of hurricane Gonzalo are currently racing across the North Atlantic towards the UK.

The hurricane is expected to transition into a post-tropical system in the coming hours.

However, there will be still be a lot of moisture and energy wrapped up in the storm as it passes across the country through Monday night and Tuesday.

The centre of the low pressure system is forecast to pass over northern Scotland through the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The strongest winds are expected to the south and west of the low, with the winds likely peaking through Tuesday morning’s rush hour.

The Met Office updated their ‘be aware’ weather warning on Sunday morning for the potential for strong winds first thing on Tuesday.

Currently western Scotland, Northern Ireland and the northern half of England and Wales are likely to see the worst conditions. Gusts of 50-60mph are possible in these areas. There is the potential for gusts of around 70mph around exposed coasts and hills

Combined with the strong winds, an area of heavy rain will also sweep across the UK. With trees still largely in leaf, blockage of drainage systems could lead to local surface water flooding with the potential for more serious damage to trees too.

With the worst of the conditions likely to hit during Tuesday’s rush hour, there is the risk of disruption to transport.

Ex-hurricane Gonzalo will also bring an end to the unseasonable warmth much of the county has experienced over the last few days. Winds will swing around to a north-westerly direction on Tuesday, dragging in much colder air. It will even be cold enough for showers to turn wintry on the higher ground of Scotland (above around 300m).

Hurricane Gonzalo was the most powerful hurricane in the North Atlantic since 2011. It affected parts of the Caribbean earlier this week before sweeping across Bermuda on Friday and then clipping Newfoundland on Saturday night.

It is not uncommon for the remnants of hurricanes to make their way across the Atlantic and reach the UK.

Ex-hurricane Bertha was the last storm to do so in August this year. The storm brought strong winds to much of the country, as well as widespread flooding in northern Scotland.
