A UK weather forecast showing the remnants of Hurricane Gonzalo, 21 October 2014

Into Tuesday, the remains of Gonzalo will approach north west Scotland rapidly overnight as a fairly deep low pressure centre. The centre will track over the Hebrides by 3am to central Scotland by 6am, bringing heavy rain in the middle of the night over Scotland and north west England to west Wales, sweeping east over central to eastern England in the second half of the night with strong south westerly winds. There will be south westerly Gales over western coasts and over the Irish Sea with gusts 50 to 60mph.

It will be a wet start for the Midlands and south east England and very blustery everywhere. The rain on a cold front will move quickly south east so by mid morning the rain should have cleared the south east and the whole of Britain will then be in a strong west-north westerly flow. After early rain it should become clearer and sunny followed by scattered showers over central and southern Britain. There will be heavier and more frequent and squally showers blowing down from the north west across the north and west of Scotland to north west England, north and west Wales and some feeding through the Cheshire gap to the Midlands. There will be some snow over the higher Scottish Mountains. The main feature will be the strong and gusty winds. There will be south westerly gales at first over the English Channel then west north westerly gales over the Irish Sea and western Scotland, but also strong winds over the Pennines, Welsh mountains and over the Midlands.

Gusts of 50 to 60mph are expected over the west, but 50mph inland too so branches will be brought down and possibly a few trees. The winds will gradually ease later in the afternoon over the west and the showers dying out from the west, but staying windy over eastern Britain with gales over the North Sea. Highest temperatures in the morning over the south at 14C. Nearer 10 to 12C across Wales and central Britain in the afternoon and 6 to 8C over Scotland.

Wednesday will start dry, bright and quite chilly widely, although a warm front will move in from the west as the day progresses to bring increasing cloud. Southern Britain may remain dry with some hazy sunshine, but some light rain will cross Ireland, northern England, north west Wales and Scotland - over western Scotland the rain will be heavy and persistent. The westerly winds will be moderate and back to the south west over northern Britain, while temperatures should climb to between 12 and 13C in most areas, and 14C in the south west.

On Thursday a warm sector will result in drizzle, rain and low cloud affecting south-western, western and northern coasts, with the low cloud giving foggy conditions over western hills and mountains. Parts of both eastern Britain and Ireland will be somewhat drier and brighter, perhaps with some hazy sunshine at times. Later on, more persistent rain associated with the following cold front spreading to north west Scotland. The south westerly winds will be moderate generally, but fresh over western Scotland. Temperatures will be mild, reaching 14 to 16C across England and Wales, and 11 to 12C over northern and western Scotland.
