UK daily outlook - 23 to 25 October

By Kerry Mason, Meteorologist

Thursday will be a milder day, although it is likely to be drizzly, with low cloud affecting much of western England and Wales. Low cloud will give hill fog over the Welsh and northern England mountains. Parts of both eastern Britain and Ireland will be somewhat drier and brighter, perhaps with some sunny spells at times. Rain along a slow moving cold front is expected to persist across Scotland and northern England for much of the day.

The best of the sunny breaks are most likely to the east of the Pennines, East Midlands and East Anglia. There will be generally moderate southwesterly winds but these will become fresh over the west of Scotland throughout the evening. Temperatures are expected to reach 14 to 16C across England and Wales, just 12 to 14C over northern and western Scotland and northern England.

The cold front will gradually move south east overnight into Friday stretching from the East Midlands to Wales by dawn. It'll turn fresher and colder over Ireland and Scotland with sunshine and scattered showers, these will be heaviest across western areas in particular. It's a wet and cloudy day for central and southern England with infrequent heaviest bursts of rain; partly cloudy for northern England and eastern Scotland with some occasional sunny spells breaking through. There will be fresh south westerly winds over northern Scotland later, otherwise light south westerly winds. Temperatures will be 13 to 16C over central and southern Britain, perhaps 18C in the south east; a colder 9 to 12C over Scotland.

The cold front should clear from the south east of England overnight into Saturday, leaving a clearer dry day with sunny spells across much of England and Wales in a gentle west-south westerly breeze. There will be a few isolated light showers over the west of Wales and north west England. To the north strong to gale force south westerly winds will bring quite a few heavy rain showers to the west of Scotland, but to the east of the mountains in eastern Scotland much of the day will be dry with sunny spells. Temperatures will be 14 to 16C over central and southern Britain and a colder 10 to 12C over Scotland.
