WEEK AHEAD WEATHER. Monday, March 23, 2015, 14:24 GMT - We may be well into spring now, but winter doesn’t want to give up just yet. With winds swinging round to a north-westerly direction through Monday, temperatures are expected to be below average for the time of year throughout this week. As such, any showers are likely to be wintry over northern high ground and where skies clear overnight, there will also be the risk of widespread frosts. Compared to recent weeks, nearly all of us will get wet at some point in the coming days, although there will still be some decent spring sunshine to be had too. Tuesday Some early cloud and rain across the far south-east of England, but this should clear through the morning. Elsewhere it will be a bright but chilly start to the day with a scattering of showers across western areas of the UK. Through the day, these showers will become heavier and more widespread with all areas likely to catch a couple of showers into the afternoon. The showers will be heavy at times with the risk of hail and thunder and will be wintry over the high ground. Temperatures reaching highs of 7-10C in the sunshine, but it will feel much colder when a heavy shower comes along. Wednesday The showers will die out overnight and with skies clearing, it will be cold start to the day right across the UK. Away from coastal areas, temperatures will be around or below freezing with a widespread frost. However, Wednesday should be a largely dry and fine day with spells of sunshine. Slightly more cloud will build up into the afternoon, which could give one or two showers for central and eastern parts of England, but most should stay dry. Cloud will tend to thicken across Northern Ireland during the afternoon with rain in western areas by the evening. After the cold start, temperatures should recover to highs of 7-10C and it should feel slightly milder in the sunshine compared to Tuesday. Thursday After a dry and perhaps cold and frosty start across eastern areas of the UK, cloud and rain across western parts of the country is expected to push eastwards through the day. Some of the rain could be heavy with snow possible for a time across northern high ground. There is some uncertainty on the timing and speed of the rain band, but it should turn drier and brighter across Northern Ireland and other western areas of the UK during the afternoon. Temperatures perhaps sneaking into double figures across parts of England, Wales and Northern Ireland but it will stay chilly over Scotland. Friday Depending on how quickly the rain clears, it could well be another cold but sunny start to the day on Friday with another widespread frost. There is some uncertainty regarding the details for Friday, but it is currently thought that after a largely dry and fine morning, cloud and outbreaks of rain will spread in from the west during the afternoon. Western and south-western areas of the UK are most likely to see the rain, while eastern England and north-east Scotland could well remain dry. Another cool day for late March is expected with temperatures generally reaching 7-10C, although milder air is expected to push into Northern Ireland and the south-west. The weekend The end of the week is currently looking rather unsettled and windy with all areas likely to see some rain at times. However, with winds more from a west or south-westerly direction, it should become somewhat milder with temperatures into double figures across the south. By ..... Chris Burton.
