A Mild but Wet and Windy Weekend Ahead By By Matt Hugo - March 27, 2015.![]() OVERVIEW: The coming weekend across all areas of the UK will, at times, be wet and windy. The primary reason, as usual, is low pressure and of which two features will bring two separate spells of wet and windy weather, one during the course of Saturday for the northern half of the UK and then another for England and Wales, at least for a time, during Sunday. ANALYSIS: ![]() 1) This is a developing region of low pressure of which will deepen as it approaches the UK throughout the rest of Friday and overnight into Saturday. This low pressure will track across the northern half of the UK during Saturday bringing a spell of wet and very windy weather, especially so for Scotland, but with all areas seeing rather blustery conditions. 2) Another area of low pressure will exit out of eastern Canada later on Saturday and then quickly progress across the North Atlantic to bring further spells of heavy rain and strong winds to England, Wales and Ireland, at least for a time, during the course of Sunday with a resultant wet and windy day expected. SATURDAY: Saturday will start wet and windy with the aforementioned low pressure set to track across Scotland. Most of the wet weather from this system will be across the northern half of the UK where some heavy rain and showers will be in evidence to start the day. Equally it will be windy too with a fresh or strong W or SW’ly wind across many areas, but this near gale force across Scotland and N England, especially across higher ground. By late morning and then more particularly through the afternoon the persistent rainfall from the low pressure will clear away into the North Sea and conditions, overall, will improve with many areas seeing a blustery W or NW’ly wind develop with a mixture of sunshine and showers, these most frequent across Scotland, Ireland, N England and Wales. Equally and of some importance, is as the winds veer more W or NW’ly then this is when they will reach their peak with gusts up to 60mph to 70mph certainly possible for a short time across Scotland as the low pressure begins to pull away to the north-east. By the evening and into the first half of the night scattered showers will continue but there will be a ‘window’ of generally lighter winds and quite dry weather at times too, before the next system arrives from the west by the end of Saturday night. The 3KM model highlights the wet and windy start to Saturday across many areas, but note how the persistent rain begins to clear and conditions become more showery through the afternoon. Equally, note whilst many areas are set to see a windy day focus is definitely across Scotland for some of the strongest winds during the morning and into the early afternoon period. ![]() ![]() SUNDAY: By early Sunday the next weather system will be moving into the UK and this will bring some persistent and often heavy rain across Ireland, Wales and most of England during the morning along with a strong or perhaps near gale force W’ly wind. For parts of Scotland and the far north of England it is a brighter start to Sunday but with a scattering of showers and these too could well be heavy. The 10KM model below highlights the risk of some heavy rain across parts of Ireland, Wales, NW England and SW England in particular and it is across these areas that some large rainfall totals may well develop through the course of Sunday morning. ![]() On into Sunday afternoon and the persistent wet weather across Ireland, England and Wales will begin to clear away to the east and south-east of the UK and with the somewhat colder and more showery conditions across Scotland slowly filtering south into N England and Ireland during the afternoon and then down into Wales and the Midlands by evening. The 10KM model whilst showing that the more persistent rain will clear to the SE still maintains a lot of showers across the country in a fresh or strong W or NW’ly wind during the afternoon and evening. The development of some very strong winds is also highlighted well on the 10KM model and note that especially across more southern areas of Ireland, Wales, SW England and into S England that wind gusts during Sunday morning and well into the afternoon may reach 50mph to 60mph. Clearly when this is coupled with heavy rain and showers it will make for some particularly inclement conditions for a time on Sunday along with poor driving conditions as well across England and Wales. ![]() ![]() TEMPERATURES: Despite the unsettled conditions temperatures will actually be near to average this weekend in what will signal milder conditions overall than compared with of late. However, the unsettled weather will offset this milder theme and it won’t ‘feel’ particularly mild in the wet and windy conditions. The GFS model below highlights the expected maximum temperatures on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons and especially so on Saturday then temperatures across parts of England and Wales in any brighter intervals may reach 13c or 14C, particularly so to the east of high ground. However, note that across Scotland in particular a generally colder regime is maintained. Temperatures on Sunday remain near to average across more central and southern areas but across N England, Scotland and Ireland then temperatures will be lower than compared with Saturday with temperatures struggling to just 8C or 9C. There is little or no risk of frost this weekend given the mild, wet and windy conditions. ![]() Chief Forecaster: MH Source Info: eumetrain.org Link ................... http://www.ukweatherforecast.co.uk/a-mild-but-wet-and-windy-weekend-ahead/ Source ..............
