April Showers Bring May Flowers By Matt Hugo - April 20, 2015.![]() So far this April there has been a distinct lack of ‘April showers’. This setup usually comes about due to the combination of low pressure and the increasingly ‘strong’ spring sunshine that allows large, towering shower clouds to develop. April is often a month of extremes, just like March, with some late chilly weather possible but equally warmer weather is possible too. Overall though this April, so far, has produced a complete lack of any sustained unsettled conditions with many areas currently experiencing a particularly dry April thus far. However, confidence is high to suggest a change is on the horizon and it won’t be a temporary one either with far more unsettled conditions becoming established by the end of the week and beyond… The culprit is obviously low pressure. High pressure (settled weather) has been dominant this April and continues to provide some very pleasant weather this week. However, high pressure will be quickly replaced by lower pressure during Friday, into the coming weekend and then also into the final week of April and perhaps early May as well. This will bring quite an abrupt change in the weather with far more unsettled conditions likely with rain and showers and perhaps some strong winds too. This will clearly be in contrast to the particularly benign and dry April we have experienced so far. The GFS model highlights this change well and note how low pressure develops from the south-west during Friday bringing rain and showers and another low pressure is then currently expected to cross the UK later on Sunday and into Monday of next week… ![]() So, it’s definitely a case of make the most of the current weather over the next few days and then be prepared for a significant change in the weather. We’ve certainly done well so far this April in getting a lot of dry, fine and even warm weather too so a change had to arrive eventually and hopefully the arrival of the rain and showers will help for the arrival of the “May flowers” too… As ever we’ll keep you updated regarding this change and our Long Range Forecast will be updated tomorrow as well with more details in that.
