Bank Holiday Weekend Outlook By Matt Hugo - April 27, 2015 14:00

It’s that time of year again as May comes around and many look forward to the fact that the month provides not just one Bank Holiday, but two and with the hope that at least one of them will produce some sunny, warm and potentially BBQ-orientated weather!…

So, at this rather early juncture we thought we would take a look at the current expected weather for the Bank Holiday Weekend (2nd to 4th May) to give you some idea as to what to expect. Firstly we must highlight that given that Bank Holiday Weekend is still a week away or so then confidence in the details is rather low and some changes to the forecast are possible. However, that being said there is quite high confidence over the broad weather patterns over the weekend.

At the moment the outcome is likely to be ‘bad news’ we’re afraid if you’re after a generally settled, warm and sunny weather. As mentioned there is quite high confidence over the general weather patterns given that there is relatively good agreement between the various weather models for low pressure to become the dominant feature of the weather as the weekend progresses. Whilst the weekend (Saturday 2nd) may start off quite good, especially across more northern and eastern areas of the UK, the general progression over the weekend is for rain and showers to affect many areas at times and perhaps with some heavy rain at times too.

The general weather pattern as the weekend progresses is highlighted well on the below weather chart covering the UK and Europe and low pressure is forecast to move up into the UK from the south-west…

On closer inspection using the latest GFS model as a guide, you can see that during the course of both Saturday and Sunday low pressure approaches from the south-west and then moves up and across the UK bringing outbreaks of rain and showers to many areas over the course of Saturday and Sunday. Clearly some drier and brighter intervals seem possible at times, but equally some of the rain and showers could be heavy at times too. Also by the time we get into Bank Holiday Monday there could be another low pressure moving up into the UK from the south-west, as indicated on the weather chart for Monday, which would bring yet further rain and showers to the UK.

So, at the moment it’s a case of “don’t shoot the messenger” as, overall, it is looking like being a particularly poor Bank Holiday Weekend in terms of weather as low pressure dominates. We must stress that the details are indeed uncertain so there could well be more way in the of drier and brighter intervals at times, for example, during any of the days, but that being said given the general model agreement over the weekend then at the moment we are expecting a cool, unsettled and generally wet Bank Holiday Weekend for all areas of the UK.

As ever we’ll keep you updated in the coming days but if you’re planning any outdoor activities then prepare for possible rain, showers and cool temperatures and not warm, settled and sunny weather.
