May UK Weather Outlook

Fairly unsettled weather through May and often rather cool for the time of year too.

Throughout much of April, the UK has been largely dry, settled and warm with temperatures hitting 20C on around a third of days.

However, it turned much more cooler and unsettled through the last week of April and it is set to remain rather changeable as we go into May.

Through May, we are likely to see more in the way of rainfall compared to April with generally changeable conditions prevailing through the month.

While temperatures are likely to be slightly below average as a whole, there are still likely to be some drier and warmer spells too.

Week 1: 1-7 May

May will get off to a chilly start with a widespread frost across the northern half of the UK on the morning of 1st and on the following night too.

While Friday and Saturday will be largely dry for many, rain will sweep across much of the UK into Sunday, although this does means temperatures will be on the rise too.

Into the first full week of May, areas of low pressure will generally be to the north and west of the UK.

Therefore rain and showers will be most frequent in the north and west of the country, although bands of rain will likely push across all areas at times (particularly on Tuesday 5th).

Winds will be generally from a mild south-westerly direction, with temperatures climbing into the high teens in any lengthy sunny spells, but some cooler spells are possible at times too.

Week 2: 8-14 May

High pressure may become more of a dominant feature through this part of the month and as such there is a higher chance of it becoming largely dry.

Some rain is still likely at times, particularly in the north and west, but there should also be some decent sunny spells too.

Temperatures will become rather warm by day in the increasingly strong late spring sunshine, but the nights will still long enough for a touch of frost in rural areas under clear skies.

Towards the end of this period, high pressure may become situated to the north of the UK.

If this were to happen, northern areas would see the driest conditions while southern Britain would be more prone to spells of rain and heavy showers.

Week 3&4: 15-31 May

There is a lot of uncertainty regarding the second half of May, but current indications are that southern and western areas will continue to see some rain at times while high pressure keeps it more settled across northern and eastern parts of the country.

Temperatures are likely to be slightly below average, particularly in the south, with northern areas seeing chilly nights but warmer days.
