A Wet and Windy 48 Hours! By Matt Hugo - May 5, 2015.12:11

It comes as no surprise that the weather at the moment is particularly unsettled. Clearly Bank Holiday Monday did provide some pleasant conditions but as we highlighted in the weekly forecast, issued on Sunday, a quick return to more unsettled conditions would take place during Tuesday and into the mid-week period in general. That change occurred overnight as low pressure developed from the south and spread outbreaks of rain northwards across many areas. Throughout the remainder of Tuesday, Wednesday and into the first part of Thursday quite a deep and vigorous area of low pressure (for the time of year) will dominate across the UK. This will maintain the risk of showers and longer spells of rain but also bring some very strong winds too across parts of the country.

Through the rest of Tuesday and into Tuesday night low pressure will become slow moving over Scotland with pressure down to near 980mb this evening and overnight. Rain and showers will dominate across many northern and western areas, whilst it will be driest further south and east. A strong and blustery west and south-westerly wind will develop with winds gusting up to 50mph to 60mph at times, especially around coasts and hills of Wales, SW England and later NW England.

Through into Wednesday and the low pressure will remain slow moving over Scotland, and the UK in general, but the position of the low pressure will change slightly to allow for a chilly, but still strong or even near gale force, W or NW’ly wind to develop through the day. This will ‘drive’ showers and longer spells of rain eastwards across many areas throughout the day and note the position of the low pressure and the close proximity of the isobars (black lines), which means windy weather, across many areas but especially across the north and west. Winds gusting up to 50mph to 60mph remain possible across parts of Scotland, Ireland, N England and Wales.

So, a particularly wet and windy spell of weather on the way for early May in the coming few days. Still signs for improvements during Thursday and into Friday, but further wet weather is expected to develop across many areas by the end of Friday at the latest and on into the coming weekend as well. We’ll have more information on the rest of the week tomorrow in our mid-week update.
