Remaining Unsettled and Changeable By Matt Hugo - May 6, 2015

OVERVIEW: The weather continues to be particularly changeable and unsettled at the moment as areas of low pressure move across the UK to bring spells of rain and showers, along with windy weather too as is the case today. Through the remainder of the week the weather will continue in the same vein with a ‘window’ of better weather during the course of Thursday before another area of low pressure develops to bring rain and showers into the UK during the course of Friday and the start of the coming weekend.

ANALYSIS:

1) Low pressure is dominating over the UK at the moment and this is bringing the particularly unsettled conditions during the mid-week period with outbreaks of rain and showers for all, along with some strong winds too. This area of low pressure will clear away into the North Sea within the next 12 to 24 hours to lead to an improvement in conditions during the course of Thursday with many areas becoming dry with some bright or sunny spells, but this improvement will be temporary.

2) This is a developing area of low pressure well to the south-west of the UK that will approach the UK by Friday and into the coming weekend. There remains some uncertainty over the details surrounding the timing of this next weather system, but after the improvement in conditions on Thursday this low pressure is likely to lead to another deterioration in the weather with rain and showers developing from the west and south-west during Friday and beyond.

THURSDAY: The area of low pressure discussed above will be clearing away to the east and north-east of the UK during Thursday to leave improving conditions during Thursday. As a result for most areas of the UK the day will be predominantly dry with some bright or sunny spells and will be a marked improvement in compared to Wednesday’s weather. A few scattered showers may develop in places during the afternoon, particularly across parts of the Midlands and into some eastern areas of England, but generally compared with Wednesday most areas will be markedly drier and brighter. A cool NW’ly wind will be in evidence through the day but it will still feel pleasant in the sunshine. A few showers may remain possible across Scotland however, but even these will be far more scattered and lighter than compared with of late. The higher resolution model highlights this situation well for Thursday and clearly note most areas through the day are predominantly dry.

FRIDAY: Into Friday and after a chilly start to the day with some bright or sunny spells conditions will slowly deteriorate from the west and south-west as outbreaks of rain and showers move in off the Atlantic. It may well take until the end of Friday for the unsettled conditions to reach more northern and eastern areas and here, across Scotland and E England, then a large portion of Friday could well be dry with some bright spells, despite increasing cloud. However, for most of England, Wales and Ireland conditions will deteriorate through the day with rain and showers developing, some of which will be heavy and it will also become quite windy again as well, especially across more southern and western areas of the UK. The GFS model highlights this evolution well through the day and clearly note the low pressure moving into the UK from the west, especially so by the end of Friday with rain, showers and stronger winds becoming dominant once again.

TEMPERATURE: Through the rest of the week temperatures will remain slightly below average. Temperatures will recover a little during Thursday given the better conditions and more sunshine so it will feel a little warmer, but with temperatures still slightly below average for early May. Maximum temperatures are likely to range between 9C and 13C across more northern and western areas of the UK and between 10C and 16C across more southern and eastern areas. Noticeably Thursday night into Friday morning will be another chilly night and this is highlighted well in the below GFS charts showing the expected temperatures on Thursday and Friday afternoon along with minimum temperatures into Friday morning.
