WEEK AHEAD WEATHER. A cool and showery start to the week, but then becoming drier and warmer in the south. It’s a wet and unsettled start to the working week for the UK with an area of low pressure bringing plenty of showers and longer spells of rain to the country. This area of low pressure will stick around through Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing heavy showers and a chilly north-westerly breeze. However, later on Wednesday and for the rest of the working week, an area of high pressure will bring drier and warmer conditions to southern parts of the UK. Scotland and Northern Ireland will continue to hold onto more cloud and some rain at times. Tuesday A cool and showery day right across the UK, with the showers heavy at times, giving the risk of hail and thunder. The showers will be fairly frequent at times, but there should be some brighter spells in-between. Feeling cool for mid-May, particularly in the showers and with a brisk north-westerly breeze. Highs generally of 10-13C, but some spots in the north will struggle to get into double figures. Wednesday There will be fewer showers on Wednesday, but England and Wales will continue to see some heavy ones, particularly across eastern areas, but Wales and western England should see fewer showers into the afternoon. Scotland and Northern Ireland should see fewer showers, but cloud will thicken from the west through the day with some patchy light rain and drizzle edging into western areas later in the day. Another cool day for the time of year with temperatures generally in the low teens Celsius. Thursday A much drier day across England and Wales with variable amounts of cloud and spells of warm sunshine. Generally cloudy and breezy across Scotland and Northern Ireland with showery rain, this mainly across western Scotland where it will be heavy at times. Some bright spells could develop to the lee of high ground in eastern Scotland. A much warmer day for England, Wales and eastern Scotland with highs in the mid to high teens, but cooler in the north-west of the UK. Friday A lot of cloud once again for Scotland and Northern Ireland with some patchy light rain in places, once again mainly in western parts of Scotland. Some patchy rain may edge into northern England and north-west Wales, but for the rest of England and Wales it’s looking like another dry day. There will be more cloud compared to Thursday, but there should still be some sunny intervals to be had, particularly across the south-east. Temperatures getting close to 20C in the best of the sunshine in the south, highs in the mid teens elsewhere. The Bank Holiday Weekend There is a lot of uncertainty regarding the long weekend at present, but it currently looks like be generally dry with temperatures around average for the time of year. Despite this, there is the chance of a spell of rain spreading across the UK for a time, particularly across northern parts of the country. But it shouldn’t be a wash out with all areas seeing some warm sunshine at least for a time.
