A Cool NW’ly Wind Dominates.By Matt Hugo - May 27, 2015 11:31![]() OVERVIEW: The weather during the remainder of the week will be generally unsettled and cool. The first half of the week has produced relatively quiet and benign conditions but more unsettled conditions are now developing. A general mixture of sunshine and showers is expected through Thursday and Friday but perhaps with some longer spells of rain moving across England and Wales for a time on Friday. All areas of the UK will have slightly below or even below average temperatures in what will be a particularly cool end to the week. ANALYSIS: ![]() 1) This is a large area of low pressure situated to the north of the UK and this low pressure will progress eastwards to the north-east of the UK to end the week. It is this feature that will combine with higher pressure to the south-west of the UK to produce a cool and showery NW’ly wind and air mass across many areas of the UK to end the week. THURSDAY and FRIDAY: Both Thursday and Friday can be grouped together as the weather overall, will be similar on both days. As mentioned above low pressure will be dominating the north and north-east of the UK to end the week and this will produce a cool and showery NW’ly wind over many areas of the UK. As a result a mixture of sunshine and showers are expected on both days, the showers are likely to be most frequent and heaviest across Scotland, Ireland and N England where a rumble of thunder is possible. In-between the showers there will be some drier and brighter conditions and generally many central and southern areas of England and Wales will have fewer showers than further north on Thursday with some lengthy drier intervals. However, a weather front moving quickly eastwards during Friday may well aid to increase the shower activity across most of England and Wales and perhaps also bring some longer spells of rain as well into Friday, whilst showery conditions continue further north and west. The higher resolution model highlights the situation well for Thursday noting that most of the showers, some of which will be heavy, are present across Scotland, Ireland and N England and many central and southern areas of England and Wales are likely to experience some lengthy drier and brighter conditions. ![]() Equally our 10KM model highlights the risk of rain and showers moving eastwards across England and Wales on Friday, so whilst most of central and southern areas of England and Wales may well be dry on Thursday, clearly some rain and showers are to be expected on Friday, whilst the showery conditions continue further north. Note as well on all four charts how the isobars (white lines) are quite close together and this highlights quite a windy end to the week as well, with perhaps gusts up to 40mph to 50mph across some exposed coasts and hills of Scotland, Ireland and N England. ![]() TEMPERATURES: Temperatures will continue to be slightly below or even below average to end the week. The NW’ly wind will maintain a cool if not rather chilly feel and especially so in any showers or more persistent rain. Maximum temperatures are expected to range between 10C and 15C across the UK which are particularly low now for late May. The GFS model highlights the likely maximum temperatures below on both Thursday and Friday afternoon and nights will also continue to be quite chilly too. ![]() Chief Forecaster: MH Source Info: eumetrain.org Link .............. http://www.ukweatherforecast.co.uk/a-cool-nwly-wind-dominates/#sthash.cCw3QVOP.dpuf Source ..........
