7,000 residents seek N-damages June 16, 2015 Jiji Press UTSUNOMIYA (Jiji Press) — A group of 7,128 residents in Tochigi Prefecture sought an out-of-court settlement Monday demanding a total of ¥1,853 million in damages related to the 2011 reactor meltdown accident at Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant. The residents are from 2,266 households in the town of Nasu and the cities of Nasushiobara and Otawara — all in northern Tochigi Prefecture, neighboring Fukushima Prefecture. The claim was filed through out-of-court procedures called alternative dispute resolution, or ADR, by a public body established to settle nuclear accident compensation disputes. According to lawyers for the group, the class action under ADR procedures is the first over damages from the Fukushima nuclear accident by residents in areas not covered by TEPCO’s compensation plan. In terms of the number of people involved, it is the second largest ADR class action related to the nuclear accident after one filed by about 15,000 residents in Namie, Fukushima, seeking increased compensation payments from TEPCO. The Tochigi residents are calling for TEPCO to pay ¥120,000 per adult and ¥520,000 per child and pregnant woman, claiming that they suffered great damage from radiation contamination. Source:
