Deformed daisies from Fukushima disaster site gain Internet fame

Flowers from Fukushima disaster site posted by Twitter user san_kaido.

Photos of flowers on Twitter and Instagram may be as commonplace as sunsets and selfies, but one Japanese amateur photographer has captured something a bit more unique than a beautiful bloom.

Twitter user @san_kaido posted a photo of mutated yellow daisies last month, found in Nasushiobara City, around 70 miles from Fukushima, the site of the 2011 nuclear disaster.

The photos show daisies with fused yellow centres and with the petals growing out the side of the flower.

The daisies are not the first deformed plants found after the disaster.

In 2013, the Daily Mail posted photos of mutated vegetables and fruit, attributing the apparent abnormalities to high levels of radiation found in the groundwater.

The daisy photos come four years after the Fukushima Daichii Nuclear Power Plant meltdown which was caused after a devastating earthquake and tsunami knocked out three of the plant’s nuclear reactors.

Earlier this month, The Telegraph reported that on Sept. 5, residents of Naraha, close to Fukushima, will finally be allowed to return home.

Deformed daisies are growing in Fukushima but apparently radiation ISN'T the cause

The internet has gone crazy over a few white daisies that have been spotted at the Fukushima disaster site where a nuclear plant went into meltdown four years ago.

Twitter user @san_kaido posted a photo of the daisies in May but recently the internet went into a frenzy after theories started to emerge that the odd-looking flowers were a result of nuclear radiation.

The discovery comes after a magnitude-9 earthquake shook Japan in 2011, unleashing a tsunami and leaving a trail of devastation – including the meltdown of Fukushima Daichii Nuclear Power Plant in north-eastern Japan.

However scientists have pointed out that these freaky-looking flowers are not actually a direct result of radiation but a naturally occurring process known as fasciation.

“Fasciation – otherwise known as cresting – is a rare mutation that can affect the stem, root, flower head, and sometimes even the fruit of over 100 species of vascular plants around the world,” writes Ben Crew in Science Alert.

“The mutation manifests in the plant tissue as a flattened, ribbon-like, crested, or contorted shape, just like how the yellow centres of the daisies in the image above have been elongated and split in half.

“The fact that this type of deformity can occur naturally in these plants casts doubt on the assumption that it’s linked to the effects of radiation. And according to a 2009 study, radiation-induced fasciation in wild plants is extremely unlikely.”
