Temperatures on the rise, for how how?
Question marks for next weekend

By Simon Keeling
Temperature: 11.2C Weather: Bright

I talk more about the prospects for June in today's video, but just look at how temperatures are rising on today's 7-day prediction from the GFS for London (bottom of the page). You can view other cities by clicking here.

This increase in temperature is brought about by climbing 850mb (5000ft) temperatures which you can see on the charts below. Here's the forecast for midnight Saturday with temperatures at 5000ft between +3C and -5C across the UK.

Then look at the chart for midnight on the 25th (next Friday); 850mb temperatures are now between +12 and +5C over the UK. Some difference eh? Pressure builds too, and that means sinking air, so as it descends it warms and we get some very pleasent surface temperatures next week, perhaps to 24C for somewhere in northwest Mids or east Wales and possibly NW England?

the warmer, yellow colours to the east, and then look

My attention is being pulled to what happens after this though, and this is something I'll try to post on later. The GFS hints that an area of low pressure slips into northern France next weekend, increasing the northeast flow over southern England and bringing the threat of some rain and cooler conditioons into southern England and Wales for the week after, beginning 28th...I can buy this, sort of, and it's worth watching.

After that? Well, I suspect high pressure reasserts itself again. The CFS picks up on this pressure build, but it will be interesting to see the Japanese longer range due out later today to try to firm up on it.

More in the video.
