Miners trapped underground in Waihi.![]() A file photo which shows access to the Trio Mine through the Favona portal. - Source: Newmont Waihi Gold Miners are trapped in underground refuge chambers at a gold mine in Waihi after a fire broke out. Spokesperson from the mine Sefton Darby said all underground staff had been accounted for and had reported to mine officials from the safety chambers. He said the fire broke out in a truck engine at Newmont Waihi Gold's Trio underground mine around 5am this morning. Darby said there was no risk of a mine explosion as the Trio mine is a hardrock gold mine. Smoke is coming out of the mine's vent shaft on Union Hill. Access to the Trio Mine is through the Favona portal. All operations at the mine have been halted. Newmont Waihi Gold Newmont Waihi Gold is owned by Newmont Mining Corporation which is based in Denver, Colorado and operates on five continents. According to its website, Newmont Waihi Gold operates both the Martha Mine open pit and the Favona underground mine in Waihi. It has recently started a development project that provides exploration access to the new Trio underground mine in Waihi. Martha and Favona produce, on average, around 100,000 ounces of gold and around 750,000 ounces of silver annually. The Martha and Favona mines support a direct workforce of around 350 people.
