Panel OKs utility's check under nuclear plant

The Japanese government has approved a plan to probe a seam under the Shika nuclear power plant, on the Sea of Japan coast, to determine whether it's an active fault.

The plant's operator, Hokuriku Electric Power Company, submitted the plan last week to the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency.

Some experts have pointed out that the rift running below the number one reactor building of the plant is highly likely to be an active fault.

On Tuesday a panel of experts examined the exploratory plan that involves drilling about 40 meters under the reactor building.

It determined the plan is mostly appropriate.

The agency instructed the utility to study expanding the drilling sites, as well as the entire scope of the study.

The agency also approved a survey plan by the Kansai Electric Power Company on a seam beneath the Ohi nuclear plant, also on the Japan Sea coast.

The government's quake-resistance guidelines do not allow core facilities of nuclear power plants to be built directly above an active fault.

IAEA inspects reactor building at Onagawa plant

A team from the International Atomic Energy Agency has begun inspecting facilities at a nuclear plant in northeastern Japan to assess damage from last year's March 11th earthquake.

The team has been visiting the Onagawa plant in Miyagi Prefecture since Monday. The facility is about 120 kilometers north of the defunct Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

On Tuesday, the inspectors checked pipes and other equipment at the Onagawa plant's No. 2 reactor building.

Team leader Sujit Samaddar said they plan to compare their findings with those from Fukushima Daiichi to deepen understanding of how earthquakes affect nuclear plants.

The team also plans to enter other reactor buildings and interview employees of the Onagawa plant's operator before holding a news conference in Tokyo next week.
