Ozawa's party: End nuclear power in 10 years The new party launched earlier this month by politicians who splintered off from the ruling Democratic Party is proposing to eliminate the country's nuclear power plants in 10 years. The new party, called Kokumin no Seikatsu ga Daiichi, which literally translates as "people's lives first," opened its head office on Wednesday in Tokyo. The leader of the new party, Ichiro Ozawa, held a news conference to unveil a set of key policy proposals. The party says that all nuclear power plants should be eliminated in the next 10 years while developing technologies for energy conservation and promoting renewable energy. It is also firmly against a consumption tax increase. The party says such a measure would deal a heavy blow to smaller businesses and people in agriculture, forestry and fisheries, whose industries are not that strong. The party adds local communities should be the key players in society and calls for more powers to be given to local governments regarding spending and revenue sources. It proposes granting a total of about 500 billion dollars in government subsidies and expenses for provincial governments to implement policies. Ozawa says his party will work to achieve its agenda concentrating on everyday people's livelihoods as well as local revitalization. Aug. 1, 2012 - Updated 12:06 UTC source:
