Families file for TEPCO compensation FUKUSHIMA (Jiji Press)--Families of people who died in the March 2011 tsunami filed for compensation from Tokyo Electric Power Co. on Thursday, arguing delays in search and recovery missions following the disaster were caused by the crisis at TEPCO's Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant. A total of 333 people in Namie, Fukushima Prefecture, filed claims with the government's nuclear accident dispute settlement center in Tokyo and demanded TEPCO pay 10 million yen for each deceased family member. According to a lawyers' group, 164 people who lost family near the crippled power plant took part in arbitration at the Tokyo settlement center. All victims died within the 20-kilometer exclusion zone surrounding the plant, the lawyers said. The families also claimed that search and rescue operations were delayed for a month after the accident. Morihisa Kanoya, 72, chairman of a bereaved families association in Namie, said the families are now finally able to take the first step toward compensation. (Aug. 10, 2012) source:
