Panel to analyze public opinion on energy policy

The Japanese government is planning to ask experts to analyze a large volume of public opinion it has received on the nation's future dependence on nuclear power.

The government has held public hearings and solicited opinions nationwide, as it reviews its energy policy in the wake of last year's nuclear disaster.

It has received more than 80,000 responses since early July.

Members of the public were presented with 3 options for the country's dependence on nuclear power --zero percent, around 15 percent, or between 20 and 25 percent -- as of 2030.

National Policy Minister Motohisa Furukawa said on Monday the experts will study an appropriate way to sort out the responses, from the standpoint of ensuring fairness, neutrality and transparency.

The expert panel is expected to conclude its analyses by the end of August.

Over 60 Pct of Japanese Oppose Nuclear Power: Survey

Tokyo, Aug. 11 (Jiji Press)--Over 60 pct of Japanese think their country should give up nuclear power generation, a recent Jiji Press survey showed.

About a half of the respondents opposed the resumption of idled nuclear reactors.

The survey covered 4,000 men and women aged 20 or older across the country between July 6 and 16, with valid response obtained from 1,211 of them.

During a face-to-face interview, respondents rated their attitudes toward various issues related to nuclear energy use, on a scale of zero to 10 with 5 meaning "neither agree or disagree."

Of the respondents, 62.6 pct opposed the use of nuclear energy, giving scores between zero and 4, with 17.8 pct saying they think Japan should abolish all its nuclear power plants immediately.
