Nuclear scientists to probe Fukushima accident

Japanese nuclear scientists have set up a panel to investigate last year's accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The Atomic Energy Society of Japan formed a committee on Tuesday that consists of 40 experts from universities and research institutes.

The panel, which is to meet once a month, will conduct a comprehensive study of why the accident occurred, based on findings made in specialized fields.

It will also interview officials from the government and Tokyo Electric Power Company, the operator of the plant.

The panel aims to issue a report by December 2013.

University of Tokyo Professor Satoru Tanaka, who chairs the committee, said the panel will ask the government and the utility to investigate the massive release of radioactive substances and other issues, and then analyze their findings.

He said his panel would also conduct an internal examination of the Atomic Energy Society itself to determine why it failed to avert the accident.

Tanaka said the society will reform itself if necessary.

Some are criticizing the new panel, as all its members are from the atomic energy society and their first meeting was held behind closed doors.

Panels set up by the Diet and the government have already released reports, but many questions remain.
