New citizens group aims for anti-nuclear plant law

Japanese Nobel laureate writer Kenzaburo Oe and 20 others have launched a citizens' group that aims to introduce legislation to scrap all nuclear power plants in Japan.

Other officers of the group include musician Ryuichi Sakamoto, lawyer Kenji Utsunomiya and Mayor Katsunobu Sakurai of Minamisoma city in Fukushima Prefecture.

The group unveiled its proposed legislation at a news conference on Wednesday in Tokyo.

The bill calls for limiting existing nuclear plants to 40 years of operation and bans construction of new facilities.

It says all nuclear plants should be decommissioned between fiscal 2020 and 2025.

The group says it will lobby lawmakers and political parties to get the bill submitted during the current session of Diet.

Oe told reporters that Japan must scrap nuclear plants so as not to hamper the lives of the next generation, and that the legislation is necessary for achieving this goal.
